Blue

POSTED BY SI

Yet another driving day today. Who'd have thought a driving holiday would involve quite so much driving? Driving driving driving.

We left Hanmer Springs this morning, dumped our waste and grey water and refilled the water tanks. We did not fill up with diesel. Two hours later we were at the top of the Lewis Pass in the middle of the mountains, at least another 100k to the west coast and any town worthy of bold type on the map, on vapour.

Middle of the mountains, no signal, raining. Quite pretty though.

Fortunately Springs Junction, little more than a fork in the road, boasts a gas station. "Yeah mate," with a grin, "We get that all the time. Always rescuing folks. Part of the gig."

Half an hour short of Franz Josef we came across the kind of sight that brings you up short. At the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, they put dye in the lakes to make them look this impossible blue. I'm fairly sure this wasn't dyed.

The picture doesn't do it justice. We stood at the side of the road and couldn't leave till I'd thrown a stone to the other side. Only took 10 minutes.
